"Aboriginal painting owes its success to the aesthetic shock it procures and to the beauty, strength and magic leaping out from the canvas. And magic is probably the most appropriate term to describe this art which is often rooted in the sacred - only the enlightened paint, and then only themes to which they have the rights.
In contemporary Western art, the dialogue sometimes appears to prevail over the work's visual or emotional impact. Here, all is unified. Solid construction, vigour, colours and magic all add to the 50,000-year history of this people, and to the sacred dimension of the Dreaming."
